Greetings, song lover! Welcome to the first newsletter from Uncaged Bird. Currently, the plan is to mail these every Friday, with a few exceptions here and there. Half the time, I’ll share singing-related things I found interesting. On the other Fridays, the newsletter will contain the latest article from Uncaged Bird.

A choir rises from tragedy

Remember the Skagit Valley Chorale? Well, they're still singing! This story is inspiring for those of us who are looking forward to group singing again.

Healing through Pavarotti

Opera is a love of mine, and it was fascinating to learn how a woman came to be an opera fan after her father's death from Covid-19.

The Singing Neanderthals

I've just finished this book. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Wait…what do you think it sounds like? Did you know that pre-historic lullabies may be a source of human music-making? There's so much in this book that I'll likely write more than one blog post about it…

Not your college theory class

Did you take music theory classes in college and wonder what the point was? (Sorry, Dr. Linton!) Adam Neely's YouTube channel will change your mind.

Michael Stipe is a delightful human

R.E.M. loomed large in my middle school years. Michael Stipe, at age 61, reads as a generous, sensitive, and down-to-earth pop star. The interviewer compares his voice to Marvin Gaye, and Stipe takes this as a big compliment. Stipe says he hears that in the song “Strange currencies.” But he also says he “always thought there was a lot of Michael Hutchins, especially in the bridge.” Huh…

Beam me up, Bobby

For Bob Dylan's 80th birthday on May 24th, I listened to William Shatner's cover of “Tambourine man.” He goes where no man has gone before.

Have a lovely weekend!
